FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

$19,000 RAISED FOR CHARITY BY MRE TUG OF WAR
TO BE DISTRIBUTED

Tug Charity Donations Give Away Ceremony
Wednesday, December 19, 4 p.m.
Boatyard Bar & Grill, corner of 4th Street and Severn Avenue

One of the most joyous and fulfilling ceremonies of the entire MRE year will take place next tomorrow at the Boatyard Bar & Grill, corner of 4th Street and Severn Avenue, in good ole Eastport!

MRE will hand out checks totaling $19,000 and everyone is invited to attend. Together, the MRE community will celebrate another hugely successful Tug-Of-War for charity.

The Fourth Annual International Tug of War, held Nov. 3, 2001, was fun...with a purpose. More than $19,000 was raised by the 14 participating teams and their sponsors. Local charities will benefit, including:

  • Chesapeake Bay Foundation Oyster Restoration Project
  • Monitor International
  • OIC Job Readiness Center
  • Eastport Elementary RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) Program
  • Hulan Marshall Drug Counseling Center
  • Eastport SPCA
  • Love & Action
  • Anchor House
  • Annapolis Maritime Museum/Library
  • Anne Arundel Civil Air Patrol

In addition to this charities named above, each team has designated its own list of charities to which a portion of the funds it raised will be donated.

MRE is also donating a portion of the funds to families of victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The Tug of War draws on the rivalry between Eastport, the maritime neighborhood across Spa Creek from downtown Annapolis, and the city itself, with civic pride on both sides of the creek making this zany event more than a community fun day. The family-friendly event draws crowds on both sides of the harbor, all vying for bragging rights for the next year.

MRE sponsors the event as part of its commitment to make the entire community a better place to live. With the financial backing of other private groups and businesses, the Tug is an outstanding example of how to supplement local, state and federal government activities.
