FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Leadership for the Republic
MRE Elects Officers for 2002-2003

By acclimation of those who attended the monthly citizens meeting tonight, the citizens of the Maritime Republic of Eastport elected a slate of new leaders for 2002-2003. They will take office, appropriately, on April Fools Day, April 1.

Mike Raab, head of the 2001 Tug of War and father of the MRE Navy's Yellow Submarine, is the new Premier. "I'd like to thank the revolting people of MRE for asking me to lead us into our fifth revolting year," he said, humbly. "I hope I'm up to it." So do we. Premier Raab is a construction manager who lives aboard his yacht with his dog.

Archeologist Jane Cox, MRE's Minister Old and Musty Things, was elected Vice Premier. Raab said Cox would be dispatched to an undisclosed location in the event of any dangerous attacks on the Republic during the course of the year.

MRE's new treasurer is Bob Taylor, who also played a big part in coordinating volunteers for the 2001 Tug of War. He is rumored to have had his financial training at some little firm outside of Eastport called Anders or Anderson, or something like that.

Liz West will be the 2002 MRE Secretary. She is the coordinator and organizer of MRE's Dog Day Afternoon, to be held Saturday, March 23, and counts the four-footed citizens of the peninsula among her strongest supporters.

Big doings are on tap for the tongue-in-cheek breakaway republic's MRE's fifth year and the new officers will be looking to many citizen volunteers to make good things happen in Eastport for the benefit of the entire community.

Election of the Revolutionary Council for 2002-2003 was postponed until the next meeting, scheduled for Monday, April 15, at 6:30 p.m. in Carrol's Creek Restaurant. Up for election are: Chris Earls, Rick Kennedy, Yvonne Shields, Phil Staller, and Andy Terry.

About MRE

The Maritime Republic of Eastport was founded in 1998 as a creative way to promote and encourage the patronage of Eastport businesses that were destined to be hurt by the Maryland State Highway Administration's shutting down for repair the drawbridge connecting mainland Annapolis with the Eastport peninsula. The citizens of Eastport took advantage of their isolation to sever their social, political and economic ties as well, with tongue firmly in cheek.

The goal was to foster a spirit of independence and merriment in a manner befitting the character of Eastport and at the same time, to celebrate Eastport's proud heritage and quality of life. MRE sponsors a number of charitable and fun events each year, most notably the Tug of War across the Gulf of Eastport (Annapolis Harbor). Over the past four years, more than $62,000 has been raised by the Tug of War and donated to local charities.

MRE has become a force in the area, doing good for the community and having fun at the same time. MRE meetings and activities are open to all. More information is available online at www.themre.org.
