FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MRE'S Extreme Sporting Events Coming Up March 23
The .05K Run Over Spa Creek Bridge & Dog Day Afternoon

Two-footed and four-footed athletes from around the globe are gearing up for The Maritime Republic of Eastport's premier extreme sporting events on Saturday, March 23-The Fourth Annual .05K Run across Spa Creek Bridge and the canine Olympics of Dog Day Afternoon.

The two fun community events will begin with a maritime canon volley to start the Run, in fine MRE tradition, at the crack o'noon and Dog Day Afternoon will immediately follow. Proceeds of both events will benefit the fine work of Christmas in April in Eastport and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.

The .05k Run, a "grueling" event, is expected test the endurance of finely tuned athletes from around the world. Last year's winner completed this Extreme Race in about 17 seconds (wearing a pair of hiking boots). International race authorities are considering dubbing it the "Eastport Un-athalon Rubberman" competition.

All runners, joggers, and walkers, are welcome to enter. Registration will take place at Eastport Elementary School the day of the event. The modest registration fee of $15 will provide entrants with a "way cool t-shirt" and other goodies. A map of the racecourse will be provided along with a ticket to shuttle bus transportation from the registration site to the race start, and a runner's number for each entrant.

After the Run, everyone is invited to Eastport Elementary School for the awards ceremony, immediately followed by amazing feats from the feet of our four-footed friends.

MRE Dog Day Afternoon, an event celebrating the official mascot of MRE, the marina retriever, and all four-legged friends, is a delightful community event for kids (and mutts) of all ages.

Dogs and their humans will participate in all manner of contests and games. Some of the toughest competition will include the "Free-Style, Aerial Short Track, Triple Lutz Pretzel Toss," and prizes will also be awarded for the best Stupid Human/Dog Trick, Best Kisser (dog or human), for best doggie dancer, hairiest dog, best dog-human look-alike, and for the Dog/Human Pie Eating Contest.

There is an entry fee of just $10 for each dog, with proceeds benefiting Christmas in April's work in Eastport and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.

About MRE

The Maritime Republic of Eastport was founded in 1998 as a creative way to promote and encourage the patronage of Eastport businesses that were destined to be hurt by the Maryland State Highway Administration's shutting down for repair the drawbridge connecting mainland Annapolis with the Eastport peninsula. The citizens of Eastport took advantage of their isolation to sever their social, political and economic ties as well, with tongue firmly in cheek.

The goal was to foster a spirit of independence and merriment in a manner befitting the character of Eastport and at the same time, to celebrate Eastport's proud heritage and quality of life. MRE sponsors a number of charitable and fun events each year, most notably the Tug of War across the Gulf of Eastport (Annapolis Harbor). Over the past four years, more than $62,000 has been raised by the Tug of War and donated to local charities.

MRE has become a force in the area, doing good for the community and having fun at the same time. MRE meetings and activities are open to all. More information is available online at www.themre.org.
