Eastport
Dog Day Afternoon
Right
after the Bridge Run/Walk, runners and viewers alike are invited
to head to the nearby Eastport Elementary School for the third
annual Eastport Dog Day Afternoon, an event celebrating
the official mascot of the Republic, the marina retriever.
There will be demonstrations and contests of puppy prowess.
Members
of the Colonial Newfoundland Club will provide a demonstration,
Frank Montgomery and Ray Lowman and their dogs will provide a
Frisbee demo, and the Anne Arundel County Police K-9 unit featuring
"Bubba," a police dog whose recovery from a life-threatening
illness was assisted by proceeds from last year's event, will
be on hand.

All

include MRE's Ambassador to the Mainland Ellen Moyer and
Annapolis Mayor Dean Johnson.

Dogs
and their humans will gather at the Eastport Elementary School
on 6th Street and Chesapeake Avenue right after the Bridge Run/Walk.
The events should last until 2 pm or so.
A
$10 entry fee will include a canine neckerchief bearing the MRE
seal and a coupon for a free beverage at a participating Eastport
restaurant.
There
will be an additional $2 registration fee for each contest or
trick your canine pal and you enter.
Note:
Retrievers with especially keen digging instincts will be
recruited by Kevin Brooks, Commandant of the Canine Corps of Engineers,
to dig the proposed canal connecting the headwaters of Spa Creek
with the headwaters of Back Creek, thus making the MRE peninsula
into an island.
For
more information contact event chair Liz
West. She especially needs some volunteers: two for the registration
table, and a few at the end of the event to clean up and do poop
patrol. We need to leave the school grounds totally clean! Give
as much or little of your time as you can.
| Note:
Proceeds from this event will be put toward developing Eastport
Pooper Scooper stations throughout the community. This, plus
cooperation from City trash removal crews, will help to keep
our neighborhood clean and safe from disease. |
